The next issue of the shul newsletter is coming out soon! We plan to inaugurate a Tributes section which, for the token fee of $10, allows you one line in which to memorialize, thank, honor, or otherwise acknowledge someone (be creative!). Please reply with your desired listing or listings (or send the information to Sheila Nashofer), specifying "From," "To," and (if you don't want us to "fill in the blank") your personal birthday, anniversary, Yahrzeit, or similar wish, and then bring a check for the appropriate amount (listing something like "HaMagid" or "the Elmora Shul newsletter" in the Memo section) to the JEC Business Office on or before July 10th. If you have any questions, please feel free to reply. Thank you!

As we are officially in the midst of a heat wave, this advice from a concerned community member is timely:
During this time, please check on elderly neighbors -- make sure their air conditioner is running & that they're drinking enough water and ascertain if perhaps they need some things which they (wisely) are afraid to go out in the heat to purchase.
The elderly (and small children) are much more susceptible to heat-related injuries and illnesses than others. Heat related issues can be very serious.
It is always better to be safe than sorry -- if anyone has a concern about a heat-related condition, call Hatzalah and don't "wait it out." Hatzalah's 24x7 emergency tel# is 908-659-9550. Thank you.
For more information on heat-triggered illness and related issues, please see this CDC page. Thank you.

Considering the situation in eretz Yisrael, please join congregations across America (text of the t'filos was attached to this message and has been uploaded) and come to the Elmora Hills Minyan Sunday (today) @ 2PM for the recitation of Tehillim and S'lichos as we pray that the Oseh Shalom bimromav Hu ya'aseh Shalom alainu v'al kal Yisrael. Thank you.
This coming Tuesday, 25 July 2006, the community will observe Yom Kippur Katan. The JEC Elmora Shul's Mincha service will take place in the Main Shul at 7:45PM (please note the schedule change). Please see this OU page for the text of the extra Mincha-service t'filos, and if you can, please attend. Thank you.

The latest issue of the Shul newsletter is attached and also available on the Website. We anticipate mailing it to all members shortly, but if you're happy with the electronic copy and wish to save the Shul and its collators a bit of effort and expense, please reply to let us know you don't wish to receive the hardcopy. Thank you!
We hope to publish the newsletter on a monthly basis in the future. If you would like to insert some content into an issue, help with its production, or have any other questions or comments, please contact Sheila Nashofer by e-mail or at 908-352-7209. Many thanks to her for all the hours she puts into community work of this nature, and hatzlachah rabbah to her and all who help her & us stay informed about the goings-on in our K'hillah.
As always, thank you for reading. Have a meaningful Shabbos "Chazon" (re which, as well as the Shabbos which follows, this d'var Torah [also available here] may be of interest), and may we merit to witness and participate in the conversion of this period of time from yagon to simchah and from eivel to Yom Tov.

As announced by Rabbi Avrohom Herman in the Main Shul this past Shabbos, our local Federation is sponsoring an Evening of Solidarity with Israel this coming Tuesday, August 1st, in the social hall of Temple Emanu-El in Westfield, beginning at 7:30PM. Keynote speaker Dr. Yossi Olmert will be presented by Congressman Mike Ferguson and JAFI representative Elam Kott. That evening, our shul has scheduled additional Mincha (6:30PM) and Ma'ariv (10PM) minyanim so that community members can attend the Westfield event. Federation asks that you RSVP -- if you have any questions, please contact them via e-mail or at 908-889-5335 x304. Thank you.

There are so many ways, both material and spiritual, in which each of us can help achainu v'achyosainu baAretz. In this message, we list one material and one spiritual method.
For those who can and wish to contribute money, our shul recommends the Israel Crisis Fund of our local Federation (all received funds, according to the Federation, will be utilized to help Israeli victims of the current matzav/situation) -- please use the listed hyperlink in order to donate online or make a check out to the Jewish Federation of Central NJ, listing "Israel Crisis Fund" on the Memo line, and either bring it to the JEC Business Office or send it to the Federation (their address, as well as contact information and more details, is listed on the online form).
Our tradition tells us that when, as recorded in P'Matos, "elef lamateh" (one thousand men per tribe) were drafted for the upcoming war against Midyan, each tribe actually (as the "elef lamateh" phrase is repeated) contributed one thousand pairs of individuals, with one member of each pair designated for physical battle and the other designated for spiritual efforts, including but not limited to praying, on behalf of his partner -- the miraculous result, says the Torah, was that "no one was lost." When the Bostoner Rebbe and Rav Simcha HaKohen Kook, Chief Rabbi of Rechovot, spoke about this d'var Torah with Rav Chaim Kanievsky, he noted that Dovid HaMelech utilized this very method for the wars he fought on behalf of Am Yisrael and would concur with using it in modern times. If you wish to partner with someone in Israel who is involved with the battle or who is in danger because of the enemy's efforts, please e-mail Rav Kook’s office, call 011-972-2-581-1911, or fax 011-972-2-6512-950; further details may be found in the posted letter. Alternatively, contact National Council of Young Israel, which has graciously offered to act as a go-between -- call them at 212-929-1525 or utilize their signup form. May HaShem be with us as He was with our forefathers! Thank you.
