This coming Sunday evening, Sept. 9th, beginning at 8PM in the JEC Reibel Beis Medrash, Rabbi Yechiel Spero, renowned lecturer and author of the "Touched by a Story" series, will deliver the annual Matilda Goldflies Yahrzeit Lecture (Mrs. Goldflies a'h' was Mrs. Claire Kahane's mother), sponsored by Yeshivas Be'er Yitzchok. The funeral and l'vaya for Mrs. Greenspan a'h' (who lived in Fairfield, CT until her recent aliya and often visited her son, R. Alan y'lch't', during the approximate decade he lived in Elizabeth, NJ) was scheduled to occur sometime today in Connecticut. Her son will be in the States all day Wednesday at 511 Church Hill Road in Fairfield, CT (tel#: 203-374-6442; ZIP: 06825-1329) before returning to Rechov Shalom Aleichem 4/11 in Y'rushalayim (tel#: 011-972-2-567-1978 -- please note that Israeli time is currently six hours ahead of Eastern time).

Sincerest condolences to the entire mishpachah, including the Greenberg family. May we have the opportunity to share better news in the future and witness the era of "bila hamaves lanetzach."

Q: The JEC weekly schedule says, "The Elmora Ave mikva is not in service until further notice –please daven for rain." Can you explain? Thanks.

A from Rabbi Avrohom Herman: I feel terrible about the inconvenience. We all share the urgency of the matter. This is, unfortunately, a very serious problem that, as of now, is in Hashem's hand to resolve. The problem began when the basement was flooded and the mikvah waters, as a result, became contaminated. This required the draining of the mikvah and a complete cleaning of everything. Upon attempts to refill the mikvah with water that comes from the roof, the new water was found to be dirty beyond filtering. The mikvah, thus, had to be emptied again and refilled from the roof. The roof, however, kept dirtying the water because the roof itself was dirty beyond cleaning. Finally, a solution was found to the problem. A layer of Plexiglas was put down to separate the water from the roof. The last rain did send down water that was clean. The problem was resolved, but there was insufficient rain to fill the mikvah. A lot more is needed. When it fills to the necessary amount it will once again be usable. There is nothing more than we can do at this time but wait.

So much to do, so many community activities to be a part of! Here is a list of events (taking place before or during the Chag at the JEC unless otherwise noted) as of 11 Tishrei:

• kids in grades Primer-4th are cordially invited to make Sukkah artwork & decorations for both their family's and the Shul's Sukkah on Sunday, Sep. 23rd between 10AM-noon (cost: $6)
• the Arba Minim (popularly known as "Lulav and Esrog") sale will i'y'H' take place Monday, Sep. 24th between 7:30PM and 9PM
• in coordination with Rabbi Herman, Sukkah hopping around the neighborhood is planned for the first day of Sukkos (Thursday, Sep. 27th) -- families, the hoppers will appreciate any snacks you leave in your Sukkah!
• Pizza in the Hut with HSers (which was a blast last year!) is planned for the 2nd day of Chol HaMoeid (Sunday, Sep. 30th) -- the fun (flyer online) begins i'y'H' at 7PM by the JEC Sukkah and features the amazing magic of mentalist Marc Garfinkle. Cost: $12 in advance, $14 at the door.
• the trip to Hershey Park will i'y'H' take place on the 3rd day of Chol haMoeid (Monday, Oct. 1st) {25 Sep update: bus tickets are going fast, so contact Elie ASAP at 917-583-5963 if you’re interested in signing up!} and an afternoon trip to Funplex for Grades 2-8 is scheduled for the last day of Chol haMoeid -- for details, please surf to the Youth Dep't Webpage or see the attached flyers (which are also online)
• also on the 4th day of Chol haMoeid, Seniors are cordially invited to celebrate the Chag -- RSVP to Beverly Winter at 908-527-9815 before Yuntef
• and then there's Shmini Chag haAtzeres & Simchas haTorah! and we have another Simchas haTorah Extravaganza planned for both the night (Thursday, Oct. 4th) and the day (Oct. 5th) of Simchas Torah! So many community activities have already been noted, but there's more! Here's a brief heads-up on planned events not mentioned before:

• Rabbi and Mrs. Herman cordially invite all children as well as young women and men in Grades 6 through college to celebrate Chag haSukkos with them at their sukkah, 939 Harding Road! and the simchas Yom Tov begins with our children (up through Grade 5), when all Sukkah hoppers are asked to come on the first day of the Chag between 2:30PM and 4PM; young ladies in Grades 6 through 8, please come that day between 4:15PM and 5PM. The next day, young men in Grades 6 through 8 are invited to come between 3:15PM and 4PM, and on Shabbos, young women above Grade 8 are invited to come between 3PM and 3:45PM and young men above Grade 8 are invited to come between 4PM and 4:45PM. Enjoy!
• Youth groups will not take place the first two days of the Chag; on Shabbos Chol haMoeid, children through Grade 2 are cordially invited to 'group' together downstairs in the JEC school building.
• Speaking of Shabbos, Mincha services are scheduled for 6:15PM, and S'udah Shlishis, featuring a d'var Torah by Chaim Rothstein, will i'y'H' follow in the Shul Sukkah at 6:45PM.
• On the night of Hosha'na Rabbah, Tuesday night, October 2nd, Rabbi Herman will i'y'H' give a lecture entitled "Sukkot: Lessons in Chinuch" for men and women in the JEC Reibel Beis Medrash, beginning at 8:30PM -- please come!

Community member and son Joel and his two brothers sh'l'y't'a' will i'y'H' begin sitting shiv'a for their mother a'h' on motzoei Shabbos, Oct. 6^th (after Yuntef) at 1114 Edgewood Road in Elizabeth, NJ (tel#: 908-355-6144; ZIP: 07208-1031) through Wednesday morning, Oct. 10^th before continuing and (on Thursday morning) completing the shiv'a at Victoria Gardens, 26P Edison Court, Monsey, NY (tel#: 845-352-5645; ZIP: 10952-1964). Davening times for the Elizabeth component of the shiv'a are as follows:

• Shacharis: Sun @ 8AM, Mon-Wed @ 7AM
