Dear Friends:
I write to you today to request assistance with our need to grow our community.
Baruch Hashem
we have experienced steady growth throughout the Hillside/Elizabeth/ElmoraHills community in the last few years but today I
want to discuss the maintenance of that growth and to request your
participation in helping it happen.
You see, the Chofetz Chaim records (Kuntress Ma'amarim vekol Korei p.26) that it is
forbidden to live in a city that has no Mikvah. Rav Moshe Feinstein
notes (Teshuvot Igrot Moshe
C.M. 1:42) that the sanctity of Marriage is based
upon the sactity of Mikvah,
and since one may sell a Sefer Torah in order to
facilitate a marriage, it would follow that he could sell a Sefer
Torah in order to facilitate a functioning Mikvah. Without a functioning Mikvah
system, it would be asur
for a community to florish.
This is not
to suggest that our Mikvah system is in a state of dysfunction
-- it is merely a reminder of the great importance of Mikvah
maintenance and support. The Rema (Choshen Mishpat
163:3) notes that the entire community is responsible to pay for a Mikvah and ostensibly would obligate us all to support her
maintenance as well.
Twice a year,
the Mikvah system runs major events to raise funds
for the upkeep, staff, education and enhancement of the Mathilda
Goldflies Mikvah Tomer Devorah system. As Rav Teitz noted at the Melaveh Malka, the system is also working on building a much needed
Keilim Mikvah for the
community. But for these things to
happen we need your support.
The Mikvah will be hosting its annual brunch for women this Sunday
-- the guest speaker is the always-entertaining Dr. Yael Respler. Caterers must be called within the next 48
hours with numbers -- please respond today. And if you cannot actually attend the Brunch, please
consider support for the Mikva today. You can contact Shira
Platnick (sdplatn...@yahoo.com)
to make a reservation and/or direct questions to Rachie
Niren at the Business Office (908-355-4850).
I thank you
for your swift response to this issue and look forward to continual growth
together.
Sincerely,
Rabbi
Jonathan Schwartz

Congregation Adath

P.S. Also, many thanks to the
