Two local NJ Senators recently introduced a bill which will allow for state tax credits to entities that provide tuition scholarships to low-income students residing in certain UEZ municipalities (including Elizabeth).  Rav Elazar M. Teitz has asked us to read and respond to the following OU IPA action alert (which follows upon a recent press release that explains what this bill, S. 1607, is all about):

A bill in the NJ State Legislature, S-1607, would create a tuition tax credit program in New Jersey and has already passed the NJ Senate's Economic Growth Committee. Before it can be voted on by the full Senate, it must still be passed by the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee.

This bill is very important to our community, as it will allow parents and children in the most needy communities to have a choice of educational opportunities that will give them the tools they need to succeed. Lower income families would receive scholarships funded by corporate donations who would receive a tax credit from the state. Similar programs in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Rhode Island and Florida, as well as one recently enacted in Georgia have been enormously successful.

We urge you to contact Senators Richard Codey (Senate President) and Barbara Buono (Chair, Budget & Appropriations Committee) and urge them to place S-1607 on the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee immediately.... Tell them that you support S.1607/The NJ Urban Enterprise Zone Jobs Scholarship Act and urge them to post bill for committee vote immediately.

To contact Senator Codey, please see this page; to e-mail him, please click here.  To contact Senator Buono, please see this page; to e-mail her, please click here.  {Added 05 Jun: Please click here for a simple method of contacting Senators Richard Codey (Senate President) and Barbara Buono (Chair, Budget & Appropriations Committee) re the UEZ Jobs Scholarship Act (S1607/A2897), and many thanks to the community member who informed us of this method, paid for by the NJ School Choice Alliance.}  For some further talking points you may want to use when contacting either or both Senators, please see the 'blog posts re the bill from the Commerce and Industry Association of NJ, most of which (together with some other information) can also be found within the bill-related 'blog posts of the NJ Excellent Education for Everyone group.  Thank you!

In order to properly defray the costs of our Shul's many Seniors events so that our community's large contingent of "young at heart" ladies & gentlemen can continue to enjoy and benefit from them, we are creating a "Senior Group" most of whose benefits are free for all Shul members (non-members of the Shul can pay an annual membership fee of $60 or pay a smaller fee for individual events).  Please note that the monthly-learning aspect of our "Lunch & Learn" events will continue to be free and open to all seniors; that sponsors for a given event are always welcome; and that anyone who needs to make special arrangements should please feel free to speak with either Rabbi Herman or Alice Hall.  Full details are in the attached bulletin.  Thank you.

  • The next day, the first day of the Chag, beginning at 3:30PM, those same youngsters (as well as 5th Graders...and parents can stay, too!) are invited to a program (including cooling-off time inside with stories and ices) at the Fernwood Terrace playground.
