RABBI AVROHOM HERMAN, Rav

Dear Friend,

It is difficult to believe that it is Erev Rosh Hashana, and in just one day the current year will end and a new year will begin. Our tefillos and thoughts on Rosh Hashana will dwell upon the future. We will daven and yearn for a year of good health, nachas from our children, parnasah, shalom - particularly in Israel and hopefully the final redemption of Am Yisroel with the coming of Moshiach. These are significant and consequential wishes that I hope, iy”H, we all merit to have fulfilled in the coming year. There are, however, steps we can take to help bring these desired results about. We refer to some of those steps in our davening on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur when we make the dramatic declaration “teshuvah, tefillah u’tzedakah maavirin es ro’a hagezeiroh – repentance, prayer and charity remove the evil decree.” Although it is not a prayer but a lesson taken from the medrash, it is still said fervently and in unison by the entire congregation to serve as apiercing reminder of what we must do to help ourselves achieve the brachos we desire for the coming year.

Two of the three steps are fundamentally personal acts. Charity can be given anonymously or with minimul attention. Teshuva is between each individual and Hashem. Only He knows the true feelings of remorse for misdeeds of the past and resolve for righteousness in the future, which are integral parts of teshuva. Tefillah, however, has an important public dimension to it. While it is, also, personal as an “Avodah ShebaLev,” a duty of the heart that can be fulfilled on your own and in privacy, it is substantially more meaningful and compelling when said with a tzibur, congregation. In addition, only with a minyan can certain key tefillos be recited and particular obligations discharged. We must, therefore, take our personal obligation of tefillah and join with others to make it meaningful and inspiring. Proper tefillah requires concentration on the words being said and an awareness of our standing before Hashem. It is not easy to leave the mundane world and enter into this spiritual state of mind. For this reason the atmosphere in shul is critically important. Only when the congregaration is involved and participating in the davening can an inspiring environment conducive to proper tefillah be created. We all recognize how important our personal tefillos are on Rosh Hashana.  Let us make a collective and concerted effort to create an atmosphere in the shul that will be inspiring to all.

Wishing you, your families, our community and Klal Yisroel a year of bracha, hatzlacha, yeshuos venechamos.

Kesiva V'chasima Tovah,

Rabbi Avrohom Herman
