Dear Friend,

In the famous Kelm Talmud Torah in Lithuania they would post a sign before Rosh Hashanah that essentially called for a renewed sense of achdus among the students and Klal Yisroel. It explained that the fundamental idea of Rosh Hashanah is “Malchios,” our proclamation and reaffirmation of Hashem’s sovereignty over the world. This state is only fully realized whenHashem’s nation, Am Yisroel, is unified as one nation; as indicated in the pasuk recited everyShabbos אתה אחד ושמך אחד ומי כעמך ישראל גוי אחד, You are One and Your name is One; and who is like Your people Israel, one nation on earth. Considering that every person is an individual with their own distinctiveness, the only means of achieving this ideal state is by everyone agreeing to one overarching principle that will guide their lives, which is to be ”servants of Hashem.”

To encapsulate all the ideas, goals and connotations of Yomim Noraim in three words, servants of Hashem, the sages of Kelm crystallized for us a simple but yet sublime objective to strive for. It leaves room for individualism and creativity in each Jew’s sincere approach to serving Hashem within the parameters of Torah and halacha. It breeds tolerance, understanding and respect for each other. We become stronger and more productive with everyone contributing their unique talents for the sake of the greater whole. Most importantly, it is in the merit of this achdus that Klal Yisroel becomes worthy of being saved from their enemies and brought to triumphant victory over them.

When we all go to shul this Yomim Noraim, please bear in mind this message from Kelm when you recite the pesukim of Malchios that refer to the achdus of Hashem and Klal Yisroel. Contemplate this idea when you recite the paragraph of עלינו לשבח where we praise and give thanks to Hashem for not making us like other nations, for bestowing upon us a different portion and fate, and where we recognize Him as our G-d and the only G-d.

שלא עשנו כגויי הארצות ולא שמנו כמשפחות האדמה שלא שם חלקנו כהם וגורלינו ככל המונם... הוא אלקינו אין עוד אמת מלכנו אפס זולתו

By concentrating upon this message it will, hopefully, inspire us to attain the feeling of being servants of Hashem, thereby improving ourselves, community and Am Yisroel.

May we merit having our tefillos, teshuva and tzedakka arouse Hashem’s mercy upon us. May it bring upon us and all of Klal Yisroel a year of shalom, yeshuos v’nechamos from all of our national and individual struggles, good health, parnosah, nachas from our families and the achdus that comes from serving Hashem.

On behalf of my wife and family I wish you a kisava v’chasima tova.

Rabbi Avrohom Herman

Dear Friends,

With the imminent dawn of a new year, I would like to introduce a new and exciting communal venture.  Attached you will find the first edition of Shitat Hashavua, a weekly publication where members of our own community volunteer a source of relevance and general interest from the rich and expansive body of classic Torah literature.  If you would like to receive this weekly publication at the beginning of each week, please sign up at
http://groups.google.com/group/shitat-hashavua/subscribe.

As a means of introduction, please note the following:
1. The format each week will consist of a short biography of the source's author, a "preamble" providing the necessary context, and a scanned version of the source which preserves its "sefer-feel".  These 3 components are intended to appeal to a broad array of backgrounds and interests, from history buffs to Talmidei chachamim and everyone in between.
2. No one source should be viewed with an eye towards Psak!  These sources are meant to reinforce our appreciation for the depth and breadth of Torah.  They are NOT meant to inform our practice of halakha in any way. To this end, it would be helpful to approach these sources with a recognition of 'שבעים פנים לתורה'.
3. You are welcome to engage this publication as either a recipient or a writer/editor.  A truly exciting outcome would be if a significant number of people viewed this as their own outlet to share
מקורות that are particularly fascinating to them and are of potential general interest to the broader community of subscribers.
4. If people are interested, a short
סיכום/summary of the issues surrounding Shitat Hashavua will be presented each week 5-10 minutes after the start of kiddush (following the main minyan) on שבת in the JEC Reibel Beis Medrash.  Lively discussion would be terrific!
5.  A limited number of copies will be available in shul each week.  You are welcome to download and print your own copy to review during the week or to save for
 שבת/יום טוב.

Please send questions, suggestions, and comments to
gs2211@gmail.com

Dear Friends:

The Shul's Simchas Torah celebration is a wonderful opportunity, early in the new year, for all of us to enjoy a festival together.  The beauty of our Simchas Torah will be enhanced by a hot buffet on Simchas Torah night and a cold Kiddush on Simchas Torah morning.

Please join with me in sponsoring these crowd-pleasing events.  You can be a sponsor for 50, 100, 180, or 360 dollars.  We greatly appreciate and will publicly acknowledge all sponsors.  Please note that Platinum ($360)-level sponsors will receive a reserved table on Simchas Torah night.

Wishing you and your family a happy Yom Tov.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Ostrove
